who this program serves
Storybook PAL serves Pre-K and Kindergarten students who are English Language Learners in Fort Worth ISD. The program addresses the needs of bilingual students by providing a 9 month recurring and in-depth literature-based learning experience that layers the core curriculum with arts integrated educational activities. In result, a bridge between cultures is formed, creating a positive impact on students through language acquisition, literacy, and school readiness through the arts.
Fort Worth ISD has a large population of students from families characterized as economically
disadvantaged (over 80% district-wide), many of whom are also ESL or Bilingual (over 80% in the elementary schools whom we partner with). These young citizens and their parents need early services to pave the way for success in school. Studies indicate that parental engagement and arts-centered instruction are keys to accelerating literacy, language acquisition, and school readiness in the youngest of learners.
We created the Storybook PAL program to meet this pressing need. We are pleased to report that this program has been demonstrating positive outcomes for the past two years at M.G. Ellis Elementary School in Fort Worth and are eager to expand our impact by reaching more students in Fort Worth.
Our goals and wishlist for the coming year:
- Double our impact in Fort Worth ISD
- Expand the program to an additional school
- Provide additional training to teachers in arts-integrated strategies
- Support parents as they continue the educational process at home
Making a lasting impact…
“The week that we had The Lion and the Mouse, the kids retold the story using their puppets and I was able to really see just how much comprehension they’d gained from using these puppets. Please keep the stories coming. We truly appreciate the stories and those who come share their talents with us to retell them.”
– Ms. Melinda Salinas, M.G. Ellis Primary School
“Our students enjoyed all three arts (ballet, puppetry, and opera). Learning is extended in different center activities so that students can participate using their own creations. Our students also look forward to listening to Mrs. Dipsworth come to read to them. She is so animated that they are captivated by her performance.”
– Ms. Martinez, M.G. Ellis Primary School
“Proudly stated by Alfredo Norell-Guerra, a M.G.Ellis student, ‘I like the Opera one because I like to sing in my opera voice.’ They love the interaction with the artists and their crafts. Most of our children would not have had this opportunity if it were not for the district’s effort to provide such programming and your generous contributions. Thank you for all that you do!”
– Mrs. Melissa M. Abilez, M.G. Ellis Primary School
